Forgotten World

Posted by: Withstand the Fury Dragon   in U9 Remakes, Ultima 9

Produced by: Firstknight, Hawkwind, Iceblade and Splat
Website: Forgotten World
Forum: Forgotten World @ Titans of Ether
Releases:
* Freedom Mod (3.1 MiB, 71 hits)
* 2009 Beautiful Britannia Demo (6.7 MiB, 218 hits)

started as a ‘‘ for Ascension, assembled by Michael Menapace in response to the rather absurdly linear feel to the plot of this last title. The mod didn’t do much to alter the order of events in the game, or to change at all the inconsistencies encountered in ’s plot. What it does do, however, is alter some aspects of the structure of , eliminating obstacles that previously prevented you from roaming the land of Britannia freely.

Eventually, the project grew and a team joined FIrstkniGHT. FIrstkniGHT himself left the team for a while, though the project moved on; it gained a website and grew more ambitious, evolving into an attempt to decode the Ascension game files with an eye toward building a world and game editor, in order to provide players with a better experience.

Firstknight (slight spelling change) has since rejoined the team, and the project has been split into two separate projects: (a more “lush” version of the original Ultima 9) and its “Unlimited” spinoff (a more lush Ultima 9 with a few additions and revisions), and Forgotten World proper (the in-engine remake, which will feature many corrections and updates). The world editor is not being worked on as much; the team instead want to produce a series of viable Ascensions mods.

The ultimate goal of Forgotten World hasn’t changed, however: they are still intent on turning Ultima 9 — using its original, promising engine (albeit with a little help from the 3D engine as well) — into a canonical, consistent-with-its-predecessors Ultima game.

The project focus has also shifted in terms of the content the team is aiming to produce; Firstknight’s principal aim is to produce a series of well-crafted Ascension mods, rather than become lost chasing something which may not be deliverable in the first place.

OGRE is an excellent choice of rendering engine.

As for what they’re going to come up with, want to see!

Me too, definitely. This one still has a ways to go, but it’s one of the most promising-looking projects on the site at present.

They’ve done a good job in the short time they’ve been around, so it’ll be fascinating to see what else they do.

Maybe you could find some time to update this entry, it’s a just a little out of date ;-)

Yes, I agree it is, given…er…your return. And other things.

I’ll work on it tonight.

Thanks in advance for this.

You really must have some spirit in you to run this Ultima News site for such a long time now!

To “my return”:
Yes, I for myself must be infected with an “UIX virus” of some sort, because while I was absent (just too much real life tasks to do), I felt that there was something missing…
…now I know, what it was!

I love this special combination what UIX provides to me: Incompleteness and full of faults on the one side, but with beauty and style on the other. And this all mixed up with the possibility to change it (at least for our team)! This is just too alluring for me.

Finally, there is a good change that I and my team provides UIX mods as long as you provide the news for it ;-)

I can entirely understand the allure of the project you have taken on, Firstknight. I feel much the same passion for editing a game, tweaking its parameters, and correcting its flaws.

Remind me to tell you about Marathon, sometime.

As to myself…well, I feel very strongly about Ultima, and I really do support these many projects in their goals, which I think are entirely laudable. In a way, this site is my contribution to each of them, if it in any way garners publicity for them.

And rest assured: if your team starts producing U9 mods, they’ll have a home and mention here.

That’s simply wonderful to hear!

You (and Dino, of course) really provide something important to let the Spirit of Ultima live on, especially because the old Ultima series (not UO, which is very different) was abandoned by “the Officials”.

I have been waiting years to play the demo. Keep up the good work.

I have been playing around in all unused maps. The map with the giant sheep is the most funny.

Me too! I have been waiting a long, long time for this and it is amazing. Thank you so much to everyone working hard to achieve this. It’s perfect…

Giant sheep though… haven’t seen them. :)

Thanks for your positive responses, friends.

That’s the fuel, which keeps me and our team motivated :-)

On Wine I can’t run the launcher for some reason. Something goes wrong with the VB6 Runtime and Wine :(
I *guess* if I make a copy of the original u9 files and copy the demo files over, I’d be able to start the game with it. Can you give me the map numbers?
Also the fog trick in your prvious entry doesn’t seem to work on Wine as well :(

I know next to nothing about WINE, but do either of these links discuss something helpful?

I’m really impressed about the surprisingly high interest in our little Demo.

I really have to thank all of you here for the interest and the positive responses, and especially Dominus for the installation support.

Let me add a similar note of thanks to the community. I too am impressed both by the response to the demo release, and by the way folks like Dominus have worked to provide assistance in getting it to run.

Very cool to see.

Oh, I forgot the praise :)
I only looked at Britannia and liked it quite a lot (quite funny, that once I had defeated the technical issue with the launcher, I didn’t have time to look more closely at it :) ). I’m looking forward to see more.
The project could use a forum, btw :)

While I would agree that forums are useful in general, in this day of spam they are often a chore to maintain.

For now, Aiera can easily serve as a base for discussions. If this comments thread grows a bit more, though, I will look at setting up something more…er…discussion oriented.

What the titans of ether u9 forum? We’ve used it before.

December 9th, 2009 at 4:58 am
 21

That depends on how comfy the Titans are with allowing their forum to be used as the primary discussion forum for a completely different project that is not one of their own.

That’s not to say that they wouldn’t be okay with it (frankly, I don’t know)…but it’d be nice to have confirmation first, before everyone just heads on over there to talk about Forgotten World.

Well, I heard them say before that they would like the titans forum to become more of a community hub for all of Ultima…which I would assume includes remakes that don’t have their own discussion forums.

In general I agree with WTFDragon, that we have to ask before using anyones forum.

But I’m also with my team member Iceblade, there are all those positive responses as well as some discussion points, so a forum would be very helpful.

I and Iceblade will check out the different possibilities, and will respond here, if we found something suitable.

It is okay to link to the U9 subforum at the Titans forum for our project.

I don’t add forums by default, but sure…I can do requests. :)
