Iris & Iris2

   Posted by: Withstand the Fury Dragon   in Online Remakes, UO Remakes, Ultima Online

Produced by: Team Iris
Website: Iris2
Releases:
Iris (Discontinued)
* Development Repository

Iris2 (Iris-Ogre)
* Iris2 Installer (Windows)
* Iris2 Binary (Windows)
* Iris2 (SUSE) (RPM)
* Iris2 Latest Source Code

Also required (for Windows):
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redist. (x86)
* DirectX9 End-User Runtimes

is a game client for , which gives the game a more modern feel in keeping with the evolution of 3D MMORPGs while still retaining the “feel” of UO (such as it is). Iris is only compatible with a number of different “freeshard” server types. See the project website (actually a wiki) for full details.

Iris requires a legal copy of Online, preferably one of the later-edition versions of the game, but it serves to note that trial versions of UO can be used for play on freeshards without suffering limitations. Trial versions of the game can be obtained from the links given on the Iris2 forums.

build 981available, don’t seem to be able to find readme or change log on the site to see what’s been changed. Bit difficult to follow development without them.

Also Iris2 works only on free shards apparently (their description is bit confusing and contradictory to say the least) :

“Moreover, being compatible with standard UO game servers, the player is not limited to play with only users of Iris but may also seamlessly interact with players using standard 2d clients.”

“Actually, Iris is developed and tested to work on RunUO driven custom shards, but there are quite a lot of other emulators working (for example Sphere, POL, UOX). Support for official game servers is neither possible nor planned for the future.”

Why on earth didn’t they simply change the last sentence in the first paragraph instead of adding the second paragraph is beyond my understanding.

You can find all changes in our Trac. It’s also our Bugtracker.

You can also follow the development here:

I downloaded the 3D client and ran the install, but it said the file was not complete. Either the file is corrupt, or it does not work with Windows Vista.

Hi Phate,

Which file did you download, the Installer or the Binary?

Because Iris2 is 3D and 2D. This only refears to which Renderer you prefer.

Iris2 is not supporting Encryption. Thats why you can’t use Iris2 with official OSI/EA servers!

Hint1:
You link to the current UO:ML version. This Version don’t have 3D granny models in it and so the 3D mode of Iris2 won’t work.

We have a list of (old) UO:ML download links on our Website. Please use this ones!

Hint2:
Iris1 (old Ultima Iris) is obsolete anyway. You should not link to it. Maybe only a link to the latest repository at berlios.

The DirectX version you link is also too old.

Personally i would like to prefer, if you just link to the downloads on our site.

We are currently updating Iris2 and runtimes and its a lot of work for you to update your page everytime.

If people have problems with your downloads they are comming to us and as Question we can’t follow, just because we think they got Iris2 and all current runtimes from our site.

It’s also possible for you to directly link to our Iris2 download server.

Again me: Forgot to say, that your Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 is also too old.

We currently use: MSVC++ 2008 Redist. (x86) and it’s only needed if you don’t have it already installed and if you use the ZIP archive.

Okay, let’s see…

I can remove the Iris downloads, if you like. Dev’s prerogative!

And I will link to your downloads, if you prefer. I think my download manager supports it, and if not I’ll just hand-code the links.

I’ll update the DX and VC++ links too. Thanks!
