Merry Christmas!

Posted by: wtf_dragon    in Site News

I’m tapping this out on the Wordpress app for my iPod Touch whilst seated next to my baby girl in the back seat of the car. We’re on our way, the fam-jam and I, to see Grace’s parents in Vermilion for Christmas Eve dinner; weather permitting, we’ll be headed back to Edmonton for Christmas Day, to see my family.

Grace is driving, Ella is sleeping, and I’m thinking that it’s high time I posted an update to the site; that, and it’s time for my customary Christmas greeting.

In the past, I’ve subdivided greetings into categories (for fellow Catholics, fellow Christians, other believers, and non-believers), and if I weren’t typing on an iPod’s tiny keyboard, I might have opted to repeat that format this year. But as it is, I’m sitting in the back of a Chrysler Sebring tapping away on my iPod, so I think a more general greeting is warranted.

Whether, good reader, you are a believer or not, and whether you are a Christian or not, hopefully you can recognize that Christmas has a deeper and more powerful meaning that goes beyond the usual trappings of the season. Past the gifts, the trees, the feasts, past the rank commercialism and sappy TV specials, and even past the gatherings of family and friends, there is something deeper that infuses this time of year.

That thing is love, and in particular is a special kind of love, one that most certainly can be (and is) shared between friends (in good friendships) and family members (in functional families), but which can also be shared between complete strangers. it can even be shared in a way such that the recipient of it remains ignorant of it.

Christians will recognize what I’m talking about; this is the love that Christ exuded with every breath, word, and action, and then in no way more powerfully than by His death on the Cross. But that same love’s first act was the humble birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” That humble birth was the first step on a road that lead inexorably to Calvary; the infant born that night was already bound, in His own small way, for the encounter with Pilate and then the Cross. But out of love, Jesus humbled Hinself to be born as one of us, for He desired to bring us a gift beyond any we might ever imagine receiving.

And that’s a gift offered to all of us. Granted, we don’t all — or always — see that gift. But even so, there it is, bestowed whether or not we are ignorant of it.

That’s the kind of love that infuses Christmastine; self-giving, humble, unexpactant love of others, and a desire for their betterment, even if only in some small way.

Now, before I turn this into a sermon, and before Ella wakes up, let me come to the point. It’s Christmas; to every reader, I wish a truly joyous Christmas and an earnest prayer that its days will be filled with the warmth and love of family and friends.

But I would also like to offer a challenge. We’ve all likely dropped some change in the Salvation Army collection bowl, or dropped a few cans of food off at a local food bank. My challenge, then, is: do even more, if at all you are able. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Check a local shelter’s website to see if they need help with anything. Help hand out presents at a children’s hospital. Bake cookies and hand them out to street people downtown. Put aside aprehension, misgivings, and critiques for a while and just help someone, directly, in his or her immediate need.

In other words: love, to the maximum extent you are able. If you take no other meaning or message away from these days, take that much. And if you do take deeper meaning away from these days, you already know why I’m asking this.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Now go be excellent to each other.

Ultima 2 downloads work again

Posted by: wtf_dragon    in Site News

I almost forgot to mention that the downloads section for has been made fully functional again as well. So if you have a moment or an inkling, good reader, check thou it out!

By the way: a few sundry things need to be mentioned.

1) In the comments below, please leave your thoughts as to whether I should convert the image-handling aspect of the site over to Flickr, as I have been doing with my other websites. There’s any number of plugins that make it easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy to bring images over into articles here at , and using the external site also makes it easier to restore images to proper function in the event of my needing to switch ISPs again.

2) I’m in the process of building a redundant backup of all uploaded files using my account; I’ll start adding links to existing downloads next week.

3) I could really use some assistance with downloads, as they are restored; it would be swell if one or two people could, where possible, check the developer homepages for site content and make sure that Aiera has the most current copy of each remake, patch, and utility.

Changes afoot

Posted by: wtf_dragon    in Site News

I’ve been away too long.

The downloads don’t work. The news hasn’t been updated in over a month. And don’t even get me started about . I’ve been away from too long, and has suffered for it.

So here’s the deal, the changes that will be made.

First, the template. It’s time to strike a more…classical…tone, so I’ve changed the site template. This being , everything else should still function more or less the same. If something does suddenly come up broken, let me know. This site is useless if I do nothing. It is almost as useless if the community does nothing.

Second, the downloads. These need to be restored, and they also need to be updated. Dead projects need to be pruned. Living projects need to be highlighted. And the way in which such things are displayed — which has served me well since the days of Aiera’s inception — could use a bit of an overhaul, if for no other reason than that it’d be nice if the was…you know…modern. So, starting next week, and going (ideally) week by week from there, I’m going to work to get yet another section of downloads re-established.

Third, the news. This will resume — mark my words.

And fourthly, Lost Sosaria. I’d be kidding myself if I said that Lost Sosaria, in its current form, was still alive. But by the same token, I’d be lying if I said the project was dead. I have a couple of ideas that I’m toying with for what to do with everything that has been developed thus far, and I hope to have something to show for all my ruminations by the summer.

But more on that later. For now, the template has been changed, and will see some further revision in the near future. Downloads and news will resume presently.

Sorry for my absence.

Lost Sosaria site changes

Posted by: wtf_dragon    in Site News

I’ve been working on a bunch of stuff in proper, but the site design was getting on my nerves (am I ever happy?), so I opted to shift to something I found to be a little more…pleasing. And old-timey.

Also, I’ve changed the gallery component there away from , and over to something a little more -integrated. Among other things, it adds some nice magic to image-viewing, but also allows me to display gallery sections here on the site without having to redirect the Reader to a gallery sub-site.

1.69 was just released; this is the final patch plans to release for the game. It introduced a bunch of new tilesets and graphics changes, so some of the tilesets I’m using will be adapting to those changes in the near future; look for such changes to be reflected here on the site as they happen.

We have a domain now

Posted by: Withstand the Fury Dragon    in Site News

That’s right, dear Readers — Ultima: now has its own : www.ultimaaiera.com. Don’t worry, though — your bookmarks for aiera.timeimmortal.net should still work. is cool that way.

There’s actually a reason for the move, in that I’m looking to counteract the “subdomain sprawl” I seem to have developed on my server, and in so doing make the arrangement and distribution of subdomains a little more intelligent. In this specific case, I’ll be moving the Lost Sosaria subdomain over to this domain — it makes more sense to me, from an organizational perspective, to have my Ultima-related project be attached directly to my Ultima news website.

There’s one other reason as well, and that is to provide a framework through which to offer project developers who need web space the opportunity to have a subdomain set up for their project at Aiera directly, whether to host downloads or an entire project website as need dictates.

At any rate, the site has been configured to use http://www.ultimaaiera.com as its base URL, so when you click on links from now on, even if you came here via the old address (which will, as I note, continue to work), you’ll be taken to the new domain. I don’t foresee any problems, but if the reader should notice any I encourage him or her to let me know.

Going away for a bit

Posted by: Withstand the Fury Dragon    in Site News

As of July 23rd, and until August 11th, I will be in and , both in , attending the 21st World Scouts Jamboree. If any of Aiera’s readers will also be in attendance there, you are more than welcome to come and hunt me down; it’s likely that I’ll be spending a fair bit of my time in the Faith and Beliefs area, as that is where I have volunteered to work as a part of the IST (International Service Team). More specifically, I’ll be there to talk about Catholicism.

Regarding the site here, however, I will of course probably not have time to manage Aiera whilst I am abroad. If anyone would like to help out during my absence, by posting any important news that may come up in the community, please let me know via the contact form. I will set you up a login and provide instruction in how to post news to the site (being that the site is a implementation, posting news is really easy to begin with).

I’ll put up one more news posting this week, probably on Wednesday, just to re-cap any developments in the community to date. After that, I’m out of here, and will see you all in August.
