Website: WDOSX
Releases:
* WDOSX v0.97 (674.8 KiB, 93 hits)
* WDOSX v0.97 Beta 2 (651.6 KiB, 84 hits)

From the project website: “WDosX is a free 32 bit DOS extender. The most recent final version is 0.97 which you can download from this page. Supported memory allocation schemes are:

RAW (BIOS INT 0×15)
XMS
VCPI
DPMI

While running under WDosX your program has access to a fair subset of DPMI 0.9 functions as well as an extended DOS INT 21 API. WDosX comes with some libraries, example programs and a full screen debugger. It features a true flat (zero based) memory model and support for DLLs as well as executable compression.”

There are two versions of WDOSX available for download here. Version 0.97 runs properly under Windows XP; Version 0.97 Beta 2 corrects a few bugs and adds LockFile support under Win32 API emulation.

What you can use this for: Applying WDOSX is necessary to get the Ultima Collection CD version of Akalabeth working under DOSBox. Run stubit.exe (from the download here) on ak.exe and setup.exe, and then delete cwsdpmi.exe as you won’t need it anymore.

* NWN 1.69 Soundsets (31.6 KiB, 517 hits)

This is actually a comprehensive collection of utilities and in-progress remakes of titles, all done in the engine. The list of utilities is pretty comprehensive, including functional moongates (with !), NPC scheduling, animated potions, a conversation system to replace the default NWN system, and a very good reproduction of the venomous dagger of fame.

But even more promising is the list of remakes that are being put together by this team and others. Currently in progress are remakes of , (which provides the screenshot here), , , and . Most of these seem still to be in the early stages of development, but the Ultima 7 remake — which deals, it seems, only with the events of at present — looks to have progressed somewhat further.

Here is hoping, then, that this collective set of efforts bears much fruit in the future! As the projects progress, I’ll probably break off each remake into its own standalone entry. For now, this one omnibus entry will suffice.

In essence, it’s a versatile utility program that overcomes all manner of speed-related errors — divide overflows, crashes, or running to darn fast — that older games (and many of the games are old enough to count in that category) often experience when run on a system with a newer, faster processor.

There are multiple versions of Mo’Slo; hosted here is the freeware “Basic” version. Premium versions with additional features and/or a business focus are also available for a moderate cost.

Releases:
* DOS4GW v1.97 (140.3 KiB, 93 hits)

DOS4GW is what is called a DOS extender — a program that allows DOS programs run within it to run in “protected mode”, rather in than in the otherwise mandatory “real mode”. This, in turn, allows DOS programs to allocate memory beyond the 640K base limit. Some emulators, and some of the utility programs listed here at Aiera, have been built with these extension codes, and thus require DOS4GW to run.

Note: this version of DOS4GW is outdated now; the program has been updated to version 2.01 over the last few years. However, version 2.01 is only available for a fee; until I learn otherwise, the older version 1.97 will be hosted here.

The famous s — the used in (some of) the titles, and some of the various runic fonts used in the games — rendered in various font formats. Just install these in your fonts directory and submit your next term paper in a font to make proud!

Just for reference, the “Game Specific” fonts include fonts from Savage Empire, Martian Dreams, and Ultima 3. The “Ultimap” fonts, meanwhile, include a series of Wingding-type fonts consisting of the various graphical chunks that made up the world and town maps in early Ultima games. The “Ultima Normal” font is a combined script that uses both Britannian runes and Gargish script. Finally, the “Ultima Runes” font includes a version of the font for the Figlet font system (for UNIX). A GZIPped tarball of Figlet 2.0 is included in the download.

Note: These fonts were collected from four different sources: Aiera’s own backups and the three sites listed above. It is possible (even likely) that some duplication has occurred. Font downloads are presented as a series of ZIP archives according to type (Avatar, Britannian runes, Gargish script…), with each archive containing two or more ZIPped font files with the source of the file identified in the filename.
