A little heartbeat!

Grace is about 15 weeks along now, and last Wednesday she had her monthly appointment with the doctor.

Very cool: while the doctor didn’t do a full-on , she did use a little portable unit, and we got to hear the baby’s heartbeat, which was a healthy 148 beats/minute.

It’s one of the most incredible sounds you can hear, believe me. And to think that there’s a little one slowly but inexorably forming and growing there just below my wife’s stomach is…just wow. To say that I am so in awe of , and to say that I am more than just grateful for her and this incredible thing that is taking place, would be a staggering understatement.

Awwww. I remember the first time I heard those sounds a year ago, by hearing the sound of a heartbeat makes it real at first time. :) But I have to say it’s nothing compared to holding your firstborn in hands and she/he looks at you. I think we both, me and my daughter, were both as awed as we took first look each other…

So everything is going, I assume? How is she doing? I remember that my wifes feelings did go up and down, when she was pregnant, but when I remember the time now, I have mostly very warm feelings about. Though there is always negative feelings, but it’s normal and fair. It’s not even harmful to show your child bad feelings too, as long as you don’t make any physical harm(!), because it makes him/her understand that it’s okay to show your feelings.

Our firstborn daughter is now eight months old and full of energy. It’s one of the most incredible things to see how she grows and learns new things every week, if not every day.

It’s soon going to be Mother’s Day, and it’s my wifes first, so does anyone have any good idea what to buy for her? Though I already bought her a rose as a early present…

Yeah, actually getting to hold the baby is going to be awesome. All in due time, though — that will happen in late October, or possibly early November.

But yes, everything is going very well; Grace is feeling excellent, perhaps even more energetic than she has felt in some time. She’s in good health, and hasn’t had to put up with any of the usual pitfalls that pregnant women are known to have to cope with.

I’m glad to hear, Ergon, that your daughter and wife are doing well. :)

As to Mother’s Day, I don’t know what would be considered an acceptable gift; I imagine it varies from person to person. I got my wife a specially-shaped pillow that pregnant women can use to get a more comfortable sleeping position, and I also bought her a little mint plant. One suggestion I’ve heard concerning gifts for recent mothers involves jewelry that in some way reflects the baby’s birthstone, but of course it depends on how much you can reasonably afford to spend. Certainly, jewelry would put me in the poor house at present.

I would think that good gifts would include things that might help with baby care, if in fact your wife is the primary caregiver for the little one, or things that might help her relax/be comfortable. Buying her a massage (well, gift card at a spa) might not be a bad idea either, since babies can sometimes be stressful. And if you’ve got a good idea about what your wife’s interests and hobbies are, there might be an idea or two that emerges from that.

Great to hear your wife and you are doing fine. I have to wonderful children myself (a boy, 4 1/2 yrs and a daugther 1 3/4 years old). Though it can be hard sometimes and your life turns around by 180° the moment you hold your child for the first time I will never regret the decision. Children are wonderful and for me they are the reason for my own life. To watch them grow (and they grow too fast, believe me) and to see how fast they learn and what a great eager of knowledge they have amazes me every day.

The moment your baby arrives on this earth – and that is no secret – will be the most exciting day in your life. i myself cried so many tears of joy when they came out – wow, I cant describe what went through my mind.

I remember listening to my son’s and daughter’s first heartbeats as well. I will always cherish those moments — a true miracle from God!

If you are able and have some extra money to spend, I highly suggest getting one of the new 3D sonograms around week 28 of the pregnancy. They are amazing! You can actually see what your daughter will look like before she is born.

Not sure if we’ll go for the 3D imaging, but we are planning to get some manner of copy of the images from the 18-ish week ultrasound appointment. If that goes through, I’ll post the pic.
